The Best Ways to Count

Sometimes You Only Need to Count What Matter

I was invited by Dan Misener from Bumper to try out their new podcast analytics dashboard this week. Over the last decade, podcasters have gauged the size of their audience based on downloads. Just because the show was downloaded, does not mean that someone listened to it. Dan and the team at Bumper are using available data from Spotify, Apple and YouTube to shed more light into audience behaviour. I’ll share my favourite slide from my show.

(1) A few people skip the intro. Nothing against Tara Sands dulcet tones which start the show every week, but some people already know the intro and will either skip to my blah blah or further along to my first question. (Fun Fact: Did you know that Tara is the voice of Bulbasaur on Pokemon?) I know, right?

(2) Not many people are skipping our ads. Only 15% of my audience does…

Our Episode with Jeff Woods from a Few weeks ago.

Anyhow, have a listen to my episode with Dan Misener where we discuss building a great audience for your show. The episode is not just about podcasting, Dan talks about his early days at CKDU in Halifax (Dalhousie’s Campus Station) and at the CBC working on Spark and DNTO.

If you want to have a bigger audience, listen to this.

Where’s Matt Going?

At the risk of letting any robbers know that I am going to be away, I will be at Podcast Movement in Washington, DC next week. Hit me up on the app if you want to meet! I’m just there for the learning. And the friendship.

Best Thing I Heard This Week…

Sarah Burke, Women in Media Podcast, re-released the episode of her 2021 interview with Canadian Olympian Alysha Newman.

You remember Alysha Newman’s from the Olympics? She won a bronze medal in Pole Vault, faked a hamstring injury and segued into a twerk? Well Sarah interviewed her in 2021 and re-released the episode this week. It’s great to revisit this episode and hear all that she had to go through to get to that moment.

I did a voiceover for Management Solutions, a largely Spanish based company. Yes, very dire copy and I’m sure the world in going to end tomorrow … act accordingly. Anyhow if you are looking for a real voice to make your product pop, there are three great suggestions on this page including Tara Sands, David Tyler and myself.
