People Only Consume What Matters To Them
It’s Saturday - a time when many watch sports. I watched one hockey game on TV this year. It was Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final. Over eight and a half million Canadians also watched that game. My consumption of hockey has decreased over the last 20 years. When the chips are down and it really matters, spring has sprung and I have moved on from winter. The NHL’s regular season is largely an exhibition exercise where teams compete for TWO points in January. If the teams tie - a MAGICAL third point will show up and all of a sudden the game has a higher value with 3 points total being passed out.
And why is it that the hockey in January is so much slower than June? Is it because they aren’t giving their all? Yes it is… because I have seen the playoffs and they are giving their all. The fact is no one needs to watch a single NHL game before March 1. Just check out the standings on March 1 and if your team is out of it - you can get ready for March Madness.
Canadians don’t love the NHL either. They love their team playing in the NHL though. They are willing to head downtown in January in -20 weather to see their team play for two points. But they aren’t interested in the Panthers vs. Golden Knights; because it doesn’t matter.
Meanwhile, I spent the last month watching two soccer tournaments. Each one of the games in the Euros UEFA Soccer Tourney and Copa America mattered. If you lost, you were in a big hole. The results for the tournaments speak for themselves: High Ratings and a lot of water cooler talk.
That brings me to the point of whatever it is you are talking about, posting or creating. Does it matter? And are you making it matter? Because hockey and soccer will be played somehow, someway. To get attention - one only needs to make it matter.
Podcast and Book Alert
My good friend Jeff Woods released a book in 2016 called “Radio, Records & Rockstars”. There is a companion podcast for you to listen to. Now comes Jeff’s new outing, “Being Bi” which is scheduled to be released later this year. A Kickstarter is underway now; think of it as a pre-sale.
Also the latest episode of the Sound Off Podcast features Jeff. He appeared on the show way back in 2016 on our second episode. I could have sworn we spoke for 65 minutes back then. Turns out it was 22. The latest will episode will only take you 42.
STOP DOING THIS!
Stop showing up to online meetings and not having your camera on. If you didn’t want to do this on a camera, we can pick up the phone and do it Y2K Style.
Best Thing I Heard This Week…
My favourite episode every year from Terry O’Reilly’s Under the Influence is the Ask Terry episode. This year I learned how the Barenaked Ladies wound up recording the theme song to the Big Bang Theory. By the way - I was fortunate enough to have Terry on my show back in 2019 and it remains one of our most popular podcast episodes.
But Wait, There’s more… My Other Other Show!
This week I had Paul Bonaquisti from the show Denver Wine Radio on my other other podcast called You May Also Like. If you want to know the back story to how the best wine in Colorado is made - and what it is like to run an urban winery, spend 23 minutes here.
I am excited to the be the new Imaging voice of 93.7 The Super Q in Columbus. Ironically, this is the station where Paul Bonaquisti (Denver Wine Radio) got his start!
