Lastest News: The Price of Mediocrity

What’s the price of mediocrity? Maybe nothing today. But expensive tomorrow. I used to see this in radio where there was a station that would have a large market share, but it was not very good. Then one day a new shiny radio station would show up and eat a good portion of that market share.

The same thing has happened in college basketball recently. The Men’s NCAA Tournament was a slam-dunk watch, especially if you filled out a bracket and threw some money into a pool. However, the event became largely unwatchable as most star players would opt for the NBA, or transfer teams, making the continuity difficult for the viewer. To use the old Seinfeld line – we were essentially cheering for laundry.

On the other hand, the NCAA women had storylines, continuity, a handful of stars we could get behind, and drama… lots of drama. Chances are good you know who Caitlin Clark is, and have decided if you are cheering for or against her. It’s the sort of stuff that makes it Must-See TV. So much so, the Women’s NCAA basketball final outdrew the men. Different products, and viewers have now made up which one they like better.

My point isthe same can happen to your show. If you don’t have the compelling components that women’s basketball offers, chances are good someone else does and will waste no time stepping over you to get to where they need to go.

Are you thinking about starting a podcast? We have two open spots for launch in June. Please feel free to book an appointment with me and we can launch your show!

STOP DOING THIS!

Stop thinking you need to do video for your podcast. Are you a YouTuber? No? You don’t have to be. Now I fully admit to being part of the problem for sharing data that encourages creators to have a video solution for their show. However, that does not mean you need to go whole hog into YouTube.

As Steve Goldstein said on the Sound Off Podcast – results may vary. The Sound Off Podcast has actually dropped in downloads since adding video to the show… so again… result my vary. But stop thinking that you HAVE to do video.

Dave Jackson from the School of Podcasting will be on the show in the coming weeks to discuss this matter.

Speaking of which, here’s the Steve Goldstein Interview on YouTube ;)

Best Thing I Heard This Week…

One of the recurring themes on the Sound Off Podcast have been the massive cuts to radio, tv and journalism. Have you ever wondered why? This episode of Canadaland explains it.

But Wait, There’s more…Latest Show Info!

Allan Grego shared his journey from corporate training to becoming an award-winning podcast host and communications manager at Moneris. He discussed how he got interested in podcasting and started an internal podcast at Moneris to share opportunities.

This led to him creating branded podcasts for Moneris full-time. In this episode, you will hear us discuss Allan's background in audio engineering, his use of tools like the Zoom H5 for recording, and how he draws inspiration from shows like This American Life to achieve that perfect podcast sound. Alan also talked about traveling across Canada for his podcast Yes We Are Open to interview small businesses.
