Video for the Passionless and Distracted

I was In Madrid last week knocking a few bucket item things off my list. One of which was seeing Real Madrid play in Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. I had only one big giant take away and that is there is no video replay scoreboard. Know why? They don’t need it. Everyone is focused on the game and there is nothing else that matters but the on field product.

There were 6 year old criticizing the officials with passion and fervour.

Fans acted as one to react in sync when needed. Everyone knew why they were there.

In short, it made the NHL look like a waste of time.

The only other thing I can compare it to were Habs game in the old Montreal Forum in the 70’s and early 80’s… before the video scoreboard showed up.

My 3 hour time spent at the Bernabéu made we wonder what the point of all this video podcasters are making for Instagram, YouTube and the soon to be banished TikTok. Are the people you want to be passionate about your show actually taking this in? Are they going to be become superfans of your audio product? Hopefully.

The old man shooting at the clouds would prefer to have no video, more live interaction with my show and evoke passion and fervour. Something radio used to be good at.

After the game I posted a few highlights from some other Instagram accounts and it dawned on me that the video is for the people on the outside – and the heavy passionate users are the ones on the inside. Maybe those people on the outside buy a seat inside and give up the video for a game, and later buy season tickets.

Where Have I Been This Week?

SPAIN! But I also caught up with Seth Resler (formerly of Jacobs Media), & we talked about building communities. These days, that’s what you need to do if you want to build an audience.

He’s teaching arts and entertainment brands how to gain fans and generate revenue through community building. https://www.communitymarketingrevolution.com/

STOP DOING THIS!

Stop putting microphones in podcast artwork. Did Seinfeld have a TV on it’s promo artwork? Did Raiders of the Lost Ark have a movie reel on the poster? So why do you have a microphone in your artwork? Probably because you paid $5 for it on Fiverr to make you podcast artwork and you got exactly what you paid for. Don’t feel bad… I paid significantly for a graphic designer to make this.

The point is – this is what non-podcast listeners think about podcasting.

Here’s my advice when making podcast artwork: Think Vinyl Album cover. Think about those iconic album covers – the detail, the colour and how they needed to stand out at HMV or Sunrise Records. It’s not different for your podcast that has to stand out in Spotify or Apple.

Best Thing I Heard This Week…

I enjoy the Spanish Football Podcast on a Train ride from Madrid to Malaga. The award-winning LaLiga podcast from Phil Kitromilides, Sid Lowe and Alex Kirkland. Every Monday throughout the season. Of course I listened to it because they were talking about the game I saw where Real Madrid beat Celta Vigo 4-0.

Matt is still available for voice-over work! Check the site below for demo & pricing.
