Video Killed My Computer

It's truly a video world, but that's not where the fun is

In 2023 when Steve Goldstein and Jay Nachlis took to the stage at Podcast Movement to announce the “The New Rules of Podcasting”, I knew creators would need to include some sort of video integration with their podcast. Since then, I have steered my company into being able to offer video to clients and upgrade their back catalogues. (You don’t need to have video - but it can help!)

We have now installed a position at the Sound Off Media Company dedicated solely to creating video socials and full length videos. I have purchased a faster computer to handle the large files, and have developed video strategies for all our shows. I loved my iMac but it was no match for this new video world. And I love my new MAC STUDIO.

Now allow me to speak freely about video content as it pertains to podcasting. It’s not as good as audio content. As Steve and Jay have pointed in the two studies they have done AND on both times they have appeared on my podcast: 75% of people who discover a podcast on YouTube will often consume it later in audio form on something like Apple Podcasts or Spotify. Ergo - the value of putting your show into video and onto YouTube is for search, not to become a YouTube sensation.

And let’s be realistic for a second - who is going to watch this video below on a plane or train or doing laundry or mowing the lawn? No one… you’re likely going to be listening to it. Because you have shit to do. By the way, this was our Mother’s Day episode with Scottie Durrett whom I featured last week in this space. You can LISTEN to the show here. (or Watch - I don’t care which you do - so long as you do)

Another life hack: Wanna fall asleep faster? Use audio. Not video. You’ll be happier.

This Week I Learned What a Braided Essay Is

Andrea Askowitz shares a personal story about her anxiety over global warming and hurricanes, illustrated through her intense jumping rope routine. The story, performed live at the Flagstaff Festival of Science in 2024, is a braided essay that intertwines her fear of natural disasters with her physical exercise. Andrea discusses the process of writing the essay, including the collaboration with scientists and the editing by Nicole Walker. The narrative highlights the rising numbers of named storms and her preparation for potential flooding by purchasing a boat. The episode also explores the technique of braided essays and encourages listeners to try it.

Andrea does a TIPS CLINIC for Writers. This week we played off the Braided Essay she told on Writing Class Radio, and gave us all a lesson in creating a braided essay. You can register for a class here. Like any addictive drug - the first hit is free.

See You In London!

Where Have I Been?

I was a guest on the Mike Sea Podcast last week. Once again you have the choice to WATCH the show or LISTEN to the show. I talked about some of the best things you can do to grow your audience and have a podcast that reaches the people you want.

Best Thing I Listened to This Week: Famous & Gravy

I listened to this in advance of interview Michael Osborne, the Host of Famous & Gravy. This episode talks about how the whole show came together. The show later caught the attention of Wondery and is now operating out of the Amazon world. Feel free to give my episode with Michael of listen - or get right into the show and hooked on Famous & Gravy.
